My Own Hat Pattern: Burgundy Hat With Cables

I have a hard time finding knit hat patterns that fit my big head,(22.5-in. circumference), so I played around with making my own.

I used US size 8 in my right hand & US size 4 in my left hand. A technique I had learned from one of Cat Bordhi’s book. This makes for fast & effortless knitting in the round.

Silver needle is Size 4.  Multi colored needle is size 8.

I used about a half skein of Michael's Arts & Crafts, "Loops & Threads Soft & Shiny".  It's very similar to Caron's Simply Soft yarn.  I love this yarn!

CO 96 sts & join the round.

Knit 2 inches of ribbing, (knit4, purl 4).

Cable Pattern: “Back Cross”, consisting of 4 sts. Slide first 2 sts. onto a cable needle, hold in the back of work, knit next 2 sts. Knit the 2 sts. from the cable needle. Purl 4 sts., Knit 4 sts., Purl 4 sts. Repeat to complete round.
Ribbing Pattern: Work 4 rows of: Knit 4, purl 4, knit 4.
Work Cable Pattern.

Knit Ribbing Pattern & Cable Pattern until length of hat is approx. 8-ins. from the beginning. I knitted approx. 37 rows after the 2-ins. of ribbing at the beginning.

Dec. for the crown:

K 10, k2tog.; rep.
k 9, k2tog.; rep.
k 8, k2tog.; rep.
k 7, k2tog.; rep.
k 6, k2tog.; rep.
k 5, k2tog.; rep.

Just decreases now, no more just k rows.
k4, k2tog.: rep.
k3, k2tog.: rep.
k2, k2tog.: rep.
k1, k2tog.: rep.
k2tog. until 8 sts. Cut 12-ins. of yarn & draw through the remaining sts. Weave in ends.

Finally a hat that fits!
